Restoration – General Characteristics
The term restoration has taken on different meanings since antiquity. Once it indicated all of the necessary operations to bring back a certain piece to it’s original state, after either being used too much or ruined for other reasons. Today instead it also encompasses those operations necessary so that the piece can withstand time, so maintenance, reconstruction, conservation.
Starting in the XIX century two main theories became evident.
Stylistic restoration is the one for which the priority is to bring the piece back to it’s original state, whereas in conservative restoration the predominant concept is that the piece must stay in the condition time has delivered it to us in, with all the alterations that it underwent.
Modern restoration keeps both aspects in consideration.
Naturally before any kind of operation a historical analysis, and a chemical-physical analysis of the materials and the illnesses that afflictthe piece in question and its durability,is absolutely necessary.
